No, I’m not talking about hosting an ice cream or pizza get together in the breakroom. Even though an ice cream sundae with strawberries, chocolate and whip cream does sound good. Excuse me, I digress. Nor am I talking about a dance in the company’s cafeteria. “Social at work” is about providing employees with social media tools to enhance collaboration (particularly across silos and geographies), decision-making, transparency, participation in initiatives and innovation.

![]() In a social media savvy world, it’s been no secret that FedEx teamed up with American Express on their second annual Small Business Saturday program including a commitment to give away 30,000, $25 gift cards on our Facebook page. (The remaining 10,000 cards were given directly to some of our customers to distribute.)
We’ve heard the statistics but they remain staggering:
- Facebook is now the third-most populous community on Earth, with 70% of its users outside of the United States. - Tumblr is an emerging player in social media, nearly tripling its audience from a year ago. - Tout enables people to quickly update their Facebook friends and Twitter followers with real-time short video updates captured from smart phones. - 67% of the world’s population has a mobile phone subscription. Nearly 40 percent of social media users access social media content from their mobile phone. - For every 10% rise in mobile phone subscriptions in emerging markets, GDP rises 0.8%. It also needed to provide a benefit for busy conference-goers, while delivering messaging about the FedEx brand and its services. To help demonstrate the international shipping capabilities of FedEx, we created a food truck that looked just like a FedEx delivery truck, and drove it into Austin during SXSWi |
