I am proud to be a part of an organization that has been honored repeatedly as a leading motor carrier in safety performance. I take pride in overseeing a group of employees dedicated to making that happen, but in reality, every employee of FedEx Ground works for the safety department. That’s because everyone shares responsibility for safety. To ensure everyone makes it home safely every day, safety must not only be a priority but embedded in our overall culture - just like it is at FedEx Ground.

As we speak, the 2012 Summer Olympics torch relay is in progress. The famed torch is making its way to Olympic Stadium in London to mark the start of the international games in July. The Olympic flame, dating back to the ancient Olympic games in Greece, is not only a token of the games, but also a symbol of countries coming together, united in pride, sportsmanship and healthy competition. The Olympics may be the one of the best examples of global collaboration.

Adding dry ice in perishable shipments has been used as a cost effective solution to maintain cold temperatures for a limited time. Dry ice is solidified carbon dioxide (CO2) at very low temperature. Phase change diagrams establish the relationship between temperature, pressure and states of matter for carbon dioxide.

Our FedEx team just finished a 545-mile bicycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. This is my sixth year of riding, and the fabulous views of the California coast and valleys seem fresh and new every year. Most important, we do it for a good cause – raising funds to combat HIV/AIDS.

A few weeks ago, I received a wonderful reminder of the importance of intrepid endeavors and the humanistic value they can bring. The event that had me thinking of this was The Lindbergh Foundation's 35th Anniversary celebration, which hosted former U.S. astronauts, Neil Armstrong, James Lovell and Eugene Cernan - the first man to walk on the moon, the commander of the Apollo 13 mission, and the last man to walk on the moon. They were there to talk of their personal involvement with The Lindbergh Foundation. You see, Neil Armstrong helped found the Foundation as co-chair of its endowment fundraising efforts. Captain James Lovell was on its first Board. And, Captain Eugene Cernan was a recipient of the Foundation's Spirit Award in 2007. But, here's the part that really stands out to me - they didn't focus solely on this part of their involvement.

I’ve just wrapped up attending the B20 (Business20) Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico where business leaders met to discuss the global economy and recommend a path forward to sustained growth. We met just ahead of the annual gathering of the G20 Leaders’ Summit here, where finding solutions to strengthen the economic picture were atop the agenda, and we committed to working with the industrialized and developing nations to achieve that goal.

Last year members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) celebrated the culmination of 18 years of negotiations and invited Russia to join the WTO. Russia is the last major economy to join the world trade body. Its entrance into the international, rules-based trading system, which most of the rest of the world is already in, is cause to celebrate.
