51 weeks a year my good old friend Peter is a very reputable man. He works as a teacher, loves cooking and watching football on TV and regularly supports some older neighbors by carrying their groceries up the stairs. Peter lives in downtown Cologne, Germany – and this is an important point for our story. For insiders, there is a very brief and a very simple explanation why his life changes completely for one week each year. Sounds strange to you? Well, let me explain:

Dec 212011When I first met Burnetta Williams 30 years ago, I could tell there was something special about her. She exuded a quiet power and confidence that gave me the feeling she could handle big jobs. And how! She was a brilliant, results-oriented leader who took on the most challenging tasks with humility and grace. Her passing on December 13 is a loss to FedEx and the many lives she touched along her journey.

Oct 262011This year, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the 2011 Mid-South Pride Festival and Parade, an annual, multicultural and educational event in Memphis that highlights the continued need for better understanding, respect and fairness for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) people and their allies. FedEx was one of several organizations having a presence including many corporations, multi-faith places of worship, and non-profits. Supportive organizations of the event included the National Civil Rights Museum and Downtown Memphis Commission. We proudly promoted FedEx as an employer of choice and the Safe Kids Walk This Way program, which teaches safe behaviors to motorists and child pedestrians that help create safer communities.

After visiting the Philippines on a medical mission last month, FedEx Ground Organizational Development senior manager Kelly Brown shares a connection with an entire population of people who she considers to be heroes.

Oct 112011Prior to starting at FedEx in 2009, I had over 18 years of work experience…never before had I heard of work-life balance! Of course, companies I worked for said that they cared about their employees’ happiness and well-being, but there was no follow-through. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that FedEx actually walks the walk. The FedEx Work-Life Balance Program “was established to foster a more supportive work environment that acknowledges employees as individuals with priorities beyond the workplace,” and the Employee Activity Committees (EAC) that are present throughout the various FedEx Operating Companies only enhance the program.

Aug 242011...FedEx represented almost a quarter of the competitors, sending 112 of our safest professional drivers. It was fierce competition to land a coveted top-three spot in each of the nine classes of trucks.
As usual, our FedEx Champions did not disappoint.
After three straight days of competition, the judges narrowed the field to just 45 contestants — the top five performers in each class. FedEx had 17 Champions in this elite group of 45. The Saturday-morning run-off was a tough Driving Skills Course. FedEx families and supporters made our excitement very loudly known in the Orlando Convention Center. Our Chairman Fred Smith recognized very early that “the information about the package is as important as the package itself”. Mr. Smith’s philosophy was embraced by a generation of outstanding leaders, who built FedEx IT to become a birthplace of ideas. When I came on board in 1993 I was quickly impressed by the supportive culture at FedEx – one in which IT was embraced as a critical part of the team.
From the earliest commercial handhelds in 1980, to equipping our vehicles with radio computers in 1984, to making package tracking available on the world’s first transactional website in 1994, we have always sought the edge of innovation... -

Jul 182011What are you going to do now that you’ve finished 1st in your state truck driving championship? “I’m going to Disneyland!”
That famous phrase is what 115 of our skilled FedEx drivers are screaming out now that each one of them has captured their state’s championship title. This title qualifies them to compete in the National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC).
