"What are you doing for others?" - Volunteering and MLK Day

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his dedication to community and service, I am here today with 35 volunteers at Food & Friends, Washington, D.C., preparing, packing and helping to delivery 3,000 meals. Foods & Friends, an organization based in Northeast DC provides specialized, nutritious meals, groceries and nutrition counseling to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses in the metro area.
 
FedEx Office Manager, Stephanie Wolfe was six years old 44 years ago, the day of the tragic assignation of Dr. King. She said all the kids in the D.C. area were sent home from school when the news broke. Huddled around the TV, Stephanie and her siblings watched with the sentiments that a beloved family member had sadly passed away. Stephanie said, “Having the opportunity to support my community brings me a lot of joy because it’s my small way of keeping the dream alive.”  
 
mlk serviceFedEx also donated $30,000 to help fund the more than 1.2 million specialized meals Food & Friends will deliver to its nearly 3,000 clients in 2012.  Each meal delivered by Food & Friends is nutritionally specialized to meet the individual demands of each clients' illness and treatment side-effects. Since 2007, FedEx has donated more than $150,000 to Food & Friends.  
 
We came together today to answer Dr. King’s famous statement: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’”

by monica 		It is a honor to work at Food and Friends. FedEx was helping the DC community with the basic gift of food. The day went very well as all the volunteers were highly motivated and well trained. We packed meals and helped with the preparation of meals for people who were ill and homebound. During Christmas we delivered meals and saw how thankful the receipants were. Food and Friends represents what Martin Luther King would have proud of, giving to the community and making a difference. That is the FedEx advantage!
