Be the Difference: Volunteer

Be the Difference.jpg

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was always concerned about the world around me. I learned from my parents at a very young age the importance of giving back to your community, getting involved to make the world a better place, and helping those who are less fortunate.

I remember as a child going door-to-door in my neighborhood collecting money for the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy telethon. I recruited my sister, who wasn’t as outgoing, to go with me.  As long as I did the talking and asking, she would join me!

It’s ironic that many years later, I find myself coordinating FedEx volunteer efforts in the Bay Area. Over the years, Bay Area FedEx employees have volunteered their time at many different non-profit agencies like  the Alameda County Food Bank, Salvation Army, San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club.

Our Bay Area United Way campaign has been successful over the past 10 years because we have found ways to get our employees involved in their local communities, even before FedEx Cares Week began.  I believe there is a direct correlation between seeing  the needs in the community first-hand, and feeling compelled to make a difference.

For me, it is rewarding to know I have contributed in some small way to make the world a better place.

I love being a loaned executive for United Way. This is my second year, and it only gets more fulfilling. My family has also caught the bug! We do a lot of baking for our fundraising, and we go shopping for the families in need. I like hearing my kids say..."My mom works at FedEx and we all work at the United Way!" I am grateful to have had this experience, and to pass it onto my kids. ~Karla Hall-Alexander

Deb, I can say from first hand experience that YOU are one of the main reasons there is so much FedEx involvement in the Bay Area. You have personnaly inspired me to do more in my community and I am a better person for it...thank you Deb!

My Family supports United Way with our time and gifts and we have since 1984. Its been a pleasure to do somethinig good for those less fortunate than you, and we have found you get back ten fold what you give, you reap what you sew. My wife, Kathy, an ex Fedex Employee, has been especially involved with The Baddour Center at Senatobia, Mississippi. The Baddour Center is a working home for mildly handicapped youths and adults. The Baddour Center workers make a lot of our New Customer Paks for Fedex. They all think they work for Fedex. They all just love Fedex. Happiness seems to go around our United Way Fedex Efforts. Life is good. The Ricky Leigh Family Hernando, Mississippi
